What: MAN STEN, an exhibition curated by curator-in-residence Kurt Nahar

It is time for the next event within the busy year-schedule of the ALAKONDRE: A Space in Time project at Readytex Art Gallery (RAG). In the month June, Kurt Nahar will present the last in a series of three exhibitions for which he has been responsible in his role as curator-in-residence. Starting from Saturday June 11th, you can enjoy the exhibition MAN STEN, a group exhibition in which Kurt Nahar highlights the different nuances and interpretations of the term masculinity.
MAN STEN is in a certain sense, a reaction to his previous exhibition UMA STEN, in which he showed his support for the continuously strengthening call of women for equal rights, opportunities and respect. How do men feel about that? What is their approach to societal expectations and to the pressure placed on them, often by their own egos or by others in their direct environment? How do they experience their manliness in this ever-changing world?
It is indeed an exhibition in which Kurt Nahar questions masculinity. He does this with a diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, photography and installations that visualize the subject in various ways. “Some of the artworks address subjects such as man’s urge for dominance, which is expressed, for example, in the macho behavior of world leaders towards defenseless people, sometimes culminating in war or oppression” says the curator. But the loneliness or despair that men can experience in today’s world, the feminine within the masculine, and childlike innocence are also themes that Nahar touches on in this exhibition.
The Local Master in MAN STEN is Sirano Zalman, a visual artist of whom his artistic photographs featuring nudes or partial nudes, including men, are quite well known. From the collection of Readytex Art Gallery, the exhibition includes works by the artists Kenneth Flijders, Miguel E. Keerveld, Dhiradj Ramsamoedj and also by Kurt Nahar himself. Last but not least, there are also artworks on display from the guest artists Fabian de Randamie, Shawn Stolting and Hariandi Todirijo. Everyone is welcome to come and see how this diverse group of artists, either consciously or subconsciously, deals with the theme of masculinity in their work.

The making of … MAN STEN

Het is weer tijd voor de eerstvolgende activiteit binnen het drukke jaarprogramma van het ALAKONDRE: A Space in Time project bij Readytex Art Gallery (RAG). In de maand juni presenteert Kurt Nahar, in zijn rol als curator-in-residence, namelijk de laatste in de reeks van drie exposities waar hij verantwoordelijk voor is. Vanaf zaterdag 11 juni kunt u genieten van MAN STEN, een groepsexpositie waarin Kurt Nahar de verschillende nuances en interpretaties van het begrip mannelijkheid bespreekbaar maakt.
MAN STEN is in zekere mate een reactie op zijn vorige expositie UMA STEN, waarin hij de steeds luider en indringender wordende roep van de vrouw om gelijke rechten, kansen en respect, ondersteunt. Hoe staat de man daar tegenover? Hoe gaat hij om met maatschappelijke verwachtingen en met de druk die soms vanuit zijn eigen ego of vanuit zijn directe omgeving op hem gezet wordt? Hoe ervaart hij het man-zijn in deze steeds veranderende wereld?
Kortom, het is een expositie waarin Kurt Nahar mannelijkheid bevraagt. Dit doet hij met een gevarieerde collectie van schilderijen, sculpturen, fotografie en installaties die het thema op verschillende manieren in beeld brengen. “Er zijn werken die onderwerpen aankaarten zoals de drang tot dominantie van de man, welke bijvoorbeeld tot uiting komt in het machogedrag van wereldleiders tegenover het weerloze volk, soms uitmondend in oorlog of onderdrukking”, aldus de curator. Maar ook de eenzaamheid of wanhoop die mannen kunnen ervaren in de wereld van nu, het vrouwelijke in het mannelijke, en kinderlijke onschuld zijn thema’s die Nahar met deze expositie bespreekbaar maakt.
De Local Master in MAN STEN is Sirano Zalman, een kunstenaar die bekend staat om zijn artistieke foto’s van onder andere naakte of halfnaakte figuren, waaronder ook mannen. Uit de collectie van Readytex Art Gallery is werk opgenomen van de kunstenaars Kenneth Flijders, Miguel E. Keerveld, Dhiradj Ramsamoedj en ook van Kurt Nahar zelf. Verder is er werk te zien van de gastkunstenaars Fabian de Randamie, Shawn Stolting en Hariandi Todirijo. Eenieder is welkom om te komen kijken hoe deze gevarieerde groep kunstenaars in hun werk, bewust of onbewust, met het thema mannelijkheid is omgegaan.
