What: This ‘revolution’ is not a tea party, an exhibition curated by Kurt Nahar

This year, on December 8, 2022, it is exactly 40 years ago that the December murders took place. Within this framework, there is currently a special group exhibition on display on the second floor of Readytex Art Gallery (RAG). The curator of this exhibition titled This ‘revolution’ is not a tea party, is visual artist Kurt Nahar.
Kurt Nahar himself is well-known as an artist who for many years now, has used striking symbolisms to express his critical opinion on the subject of the December murders in his work. There are of course, also other artists who have felt the need to incorporate their thoughts or memories of this tragic event from our recent history in their art. In addition to work by Kurt Nahar, the exhibition includes work by the artists Els Tjong Joe Wai, John Lie A Fo, Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi, Miguel Keerveld, Ron Flu and Shaundell Horton. In paintings and installations, some made in the eighties and some recently, these participating artists from different generations, create an interesting visual impression of the effect that that period has (had) on them and on our community.
Part of the buildup of the exhibition and interviews with several of the artists, were filmed to be included in a new documentary by director Ida Does, because as she explains it: “The artists also help us tell the story, because the creative world can enter domains that often cannot be described with words.”

Dit jaar, op 8 december 2022, is het precies 40 jaar geleden dat de Decembermoorden plaatsvonden. In dit kader is er op de eerste verdieping van Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) momenteel een bijzondere expositie te zien. De curator van deze expositie, getiteld This ‘revolution’ is not a tea party, is beeldend kunstenaar Kurt Nahar.
Zelf staat Kurt Nahar al jarenlang bekend voor zijn kunstwerken waarin hij sprekende symboliek gebruikt om heel nadrukkelijk en kritisch zijn mening over de gebeurtenissen rond de Decembermoorden uit te beelden. Uiteraard hebben ook andere kunstenaars de behoefte gehad om hun gedachtes of herinneringen over dit tragisch gebeuren uit ons recent verleden in hun kunst te verwerken. Zo is er in de expositie naast het werk van Kurt Nahar, werk te zien van Els Tjong Joe Wai, John Lie A Fo, Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi, Miguel Keerveld, Ron Flu en Shaundell Horton. In schilderijen en installaties, sommigen gemaakt in de tachtiger jaren en enkelen recentelijk, scheppen de deelnemende kunstenaars, die trouwens van diverse generaties afkomstig zijn, een interessant beeld van het effect dat die bewuste periode (gehad) heeft op hen en op onze gemeenschap.
Tijdens de opbouw van de expositie zijn er ten behoeve van een nieuwe documentaire van regisseur Ida Does, filmopnames gemaakt en gesprekken gevoerd met enkele kunstenaars. “De kunstenaars helpen ons ook het verhaal te vertellen, omdat de creatieve wereld domeinen kan betreden, die vaak niet met woorden te beschrijven zijn,” aldus Ida Does.
