As final manifestation of the project ALAKONDRE: A Space in time, which started in Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) in October 2021, the month of December is dedicated to a truly unique experiment. On December 8th, under the title Manifestatie 1980-1989: Surinaamse verhalen van vreugde en verdriet / Manifestation 1980-1989: Surinamese stories of joy and sorrow the artists Miguel Keerveld and Xavier Robles de Medina launch a growing, interactive manifestation that will take shape not by their design, but by contributions from the public. Through individual stories, thoughts or memories, visitors are invited to help build a collective archive focused on Suriname in the eighties.
The concept for this manifestation follows the presentations of Xavier Robles de Medina and Alida Neslo at the panel discussion ‘Magic in Visual Conversation’, moderated by Miguel Keerveld and hosted by Readytex Art Gallery, during the Atlantic World Art Fair 2022. There, Xavier presented a video composed of various archival film fragments and a text, both of which reflected on sentiments and facts surrounding several historical events. In a reaction afterwards, he emphasized that documented archives only represent a small part of what was or is actually experienced within the community.
The intention of Manifestatie 1980-1989: Surinaamse verhalen van vreugde en verdriet / Manifestation 1980-1989: Surinamese stories of joy and sorrow is to give individual thoughts and emotions about Suriname in the eighties, the opportunity to manifest themselves in time and space. Through symbolic ‘consultations’, a collective archive will be built. Personal stories (text and/or images) are placed within a social context in order to encourage discussions about memories from our recent past, including maybe of violence and its subsequent trauma. The ‘consultations’ take place symbolically as visitors enter an enclosed ‘safe space’ in which they can express their thoughts and emotions on paper, and anonymously place these in a box within the space. On fixed times/days the visitors’ contributions are then attached to strings hanging from the ceiling throughout the first floor of the gallery. There are no conditions attached to the memories that the visitor may share or contribute to this growing archive covering the period 1980 until 1989. It does of course regard a politically charged and eventful period, but the experiences and interpretations of each individual are unique. And that is exactly what the creators of this concept are curious about. What will discover when, at the end of this experiment, we walk among the organically originated image archive of all those whirling and floating memories? Which needs, narratives and emotions are still prevalent within the community when it comes to that period? The opening act was a special performance by Alida Neslo. The manifestation will remain on display until Saturday, December 31.
PS: Visitors who want to contribute to the collective archive can also bring something from home and place this in the ‘safe space’. Please only leave behind materials that can stay in the archive permanently. For guests who have original photos or texts, we can have those documents scanned in the gallery, after which the scans will be added to the archive.

Als eindmanifestatie van het project ALAKONDRE: A Space in time, welke in Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) van start ging in oktober 2021, staat de maand december in het teken van een zeer uniek experiment. Onder de titel Manifestatie 1980-1989: Surinaamse verhalen van vreugde en verdriet / Manifestation 1980-1989: Surinamese stories of joy and sorrow, lanceren de kunstenaars Miguel Keerveld en Xavier Robles de Medina op 8 december een groeiende, interactieve manifestatie, die niet door hen, maar door het publiek wordt vormgegeven. U en alle bezoekers worden namelijk uitgenodigd om middels individuele verhalen, gedachtes of herinneringen, anoniem bij te dragen aan een collectief archief met als focus Suriname in de jaren tachtig.
Het concept voor deze manifestatie volgt op de presentaties van Xavier Robles de Medina en Alida Neslo bij de paneldiscussie ‘Magic in Visual Conversation’, gemodereerd door Miguel Keerveld en gehost door Readytex Art Gallery, tijdens de Atlantic World Art Fair 2022. Daar presenteerde Xavier een videocompositie samengesteld uit verschillende historische archiefbeelden over Suriname, alsook een tekst waarin hij reflecteert op sentimenten en feiten rondom verschillende gebeurtenissen. In een toelichting benadrukte hij dat bestaande archieven slechts een deel weergeven van wat er allemaal beleefd is en wordt binnen de gemeenschap.
De intentie van Manifestatie 1980-1989: Surinaamse verhalen van vreugde en verdriet / Manifestation 1980-1989: Surinamese stories of joy and sorrow is om individuele gedachten en gevoelens over Suriname in de jaren tachtig, de gelegenheid te geven zich in tijd en ruimte te manifesteren. Met symbolische ‘consultaties’ zal gebouwd worden aan een collectief archief. Persoonlijke verhalen (tekst en/of beeld) worden in een sociaalmaatschappelijke context geplaatst om herinneringen uit onze recente geschiedenis, waaronder mogelijk ook van geweld en daaruit voorkomende trauma, bespreekbaar te maken. De ‘consultaties’ vinden symbolisch plaats doordat bezoekers een afgesloten ‘safe space’ betreden waarin zij op papier uiting kunnen geven aan hun gedachtes of emoties en deze vervolgens anoniem in een verzameldoos plaatsen. Op gezette tijden/dagen worden de achtergelaten stukken bevestigd aan linten die op de begane grond van de galerie van het plafond af hangen. Aan de herinneringen die de bezoeker wenst bij te dragen aan dit groeiende archief over de periode 1980 tot en met 1989, zijn overigens geen voorwaarden verbonden. Het betreft natuurlijk een politiek zeer beladen en bewogen periode, maar de ervaringen en interpretaties van elk individu zijn uniek. En dat is exact waar de bedenkers van dit concept nieuwsgierig naar zijn. Wat zullen wij ontdekken als wij aan het eind van dit experiment lopen tussen het organisch tot stand gekomen beeldarchief van al die dwarrelende en zwevende herinneringen? Welke behoeften, narratieven en emoties leven er over die periode nog binnen de gemeenschap? De opening van Manifestatie 1980-1989: Surinaamse verhalen van vreugde en verdriet / Manifestation 1980-1989: Surinamese stories of joy and sorrow was op donderdag 8 december. De openingshandeling vond plaats middels een speciale performance van Alida Neslo. De manifestatie blijft open tot en met zaterdag 31 december.
N.B.: Bezoekers die willen bijdragen aan het collectief archief kunnen eventueel ook iets van huis meenemen en dat in de ‘safe space’ plaatsen. Graag uitsluitend materiaal achterlaten dat permanent in het archief mag blijven. Voor gasten die originele foto’s of teksten hebben wordt de faciliteit geboden deze te scannen waarna de gescande documenten aan het groeiende archief worden toegevoegd.
