Get ready to enjoy yet another beautiful solo exhibition at Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) this November. Visual artist Sunil Puljhun will present a new collection of artworks in his exhibition titled Sanskrti ka Sanrakshan [Preservation of culture]. A collection in which Sunil exhibits a surprising new approach to the theme that he has been focusing on in the past several years.
“To me, the preservation and appreciation of one’s own identity, is key when it comes to being able to successfully connect with other cultures. If you don’t understand and value your own culture, you cannot do so for the culture of others either.”
Where his imagery previously emphasized the darker side of human nature, Sunil currently focuses on something that he believes can help drive out much of the negativity in the world: a broader sense of cultural awareness and respect. Because according to Sunil, one of the causes of the misery in the world lies in the fact that people don’t understand and appreciate the cultures of others, which is often due to an increasing lack of knowledge of and respect for one’s own culture and heritage. This has been a subject of interest to the artist for quite a while now. Within that framework he has started researching the effects of various routes of migration on the development of culture and religion, particularly among young people throughout the diaspora.
Sunil starts his research with himself. He delves deep into the culture of his own Hindustani heritage and chooses several elements to highlight in a series of large-scale artworks on canvas. Classical Indian dance styles such as Kathak and Bharatanatyam, play a central role within the compositions because he considers them to be especially vivid expressions of Hindu culture, history and spirituality. He also incorporates traditional musical instruments, characters from the Devanagari script, henna patterns and other symbols important to the culture. And while he uses bright colors to reflect the richness of Hindustani culture, deliberate swatches of black do turn up in many of the compositions. They symbolize the feelings of uncertainty and fear associated with the threatening deterioration of the culture, due in part to increasing western influences. With his new art collection Sunil Puljhun wants to instill a renewed sense of appreciation among the public, and ultimately hopes to contribute to the preservation of the culture, Sanskrti ka Sanrakshan.

In november kunt u in Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) wederom genieten van een prachtige solo-expositie. Het is dan beeldend kunstenaar Sunil Puljhun die in zijn expositie getiteld Sanskrti ka Sanrakshan [Behoud van cultuur] zijn nieuwe collectie kunstwerken aan u presenteert. Een collectie waarin Sunil een verrassende, nieuwe benadering laat zien van het thema waar hij zich de afgelopen jaren mee bezighield.
“Voor mij is het behoud en de waardering van de eigen identiteit essentieel als het gaat om het succesvol kunnen verbinden met andere culturen. Als je je eigen cultuur niet begrijpt en waardeert, kun je dat ook niet doen voor de cultuur van anderen.”
Waar voorheen de nadruk in zijn beeldtaal lag op de donkere kant van de menselijke aard, focust hij nu op datgene dat volgens hem mede kan bijdragen aan het uitdrijven van veel van het negatieve in de wereld: cultureel bewustzijn en respect. Volgens Sunil is een van de oorzaken van de ellende in de wereld namelijk het feit dat wij als mensen geen respect en waardering hebben voor de cultuur van anderen, wat vaak voortkomt uit het niet meer kennen en waarderen van de eigen cultuur. Dit is een onderwerp dat de kunstenaar al een tijdlang bezighoudt. In dat kader doet hij onderzoek naar de gevolgen van de verschillende golven van immigratie op de ontwikkeling van cultuur en religie, vooral onder jongeren.
Voor zijn onderzoek startte Sunil bij zichzelf. Hij verdiept zich in de cultuur van zijn eigen Hindostaanse afkomst en kiest daar elementen uit om te belichten in een serie grootschalige kunstwerken op doek. Klassieke Indiase dansstijlen, zoals Kathak en Bharatanatyam, spelen een centrale rol binnen de composities. Deze geven volgens de kunstenaar immers op een prachtige manier expressie aan de Hindostaanse cultuur, geschiedenis en spiritualiteit. Daarnaast verbeeldt hij in het werk tevens traditionele muziekinstrumenten, tekens uit het Devanagari schrift, patronen uit hennaschilderingen, en andere symbolen die een belangrijke rol spelen binnen de Hindostaanse cultuur. En terwijl hij met sprekende kleuren refereert aan de rijkdom van die cultuur, blijft in het werk hier en daar toch nog een vleugje zwart opduiken. Dit symboliseert volgens Sunil de gevoelens van angst en onzekerheid die voortkomen uit het besef dat veel van de cultuur verloren dreigt te gaan, mede vanwege de groeiende invloed van de westerse wereld. Met zijn nieuwe collectie kunstwerken hoopt Sunil Puljhun onder het publiek een nieuwe appreciatie op te wekken en een steentje bij te dragen aan het behoud van zijn cultuur, Sanskrti ka Sanrakshan.
