During the month of February Readytex Art Gallery (RAG), Paramaribo, Suriname, hosts the special exhibition In de Blaauwe Boon [In the Blue Bean], curated by literary historian Hilde Neus, whose focus is on describing women’s histories. This exhibition is inspired by her research into the manumitted Caatje van Heijne, who owned two houses on Maagdenstraat and Jodenbreestraat, close to where Readytex Art Gallery is currently located.
Caatje van Heijne was also owner of the coffee plantation Dwingelo. In Suriname, the coffee that was grown there was called ‘blauwe bonen’ (blue beans), because it took on a blue hue after washing. The exhibition is therefore quite appropriately named: In de Blaauwe Boon [In the Blue Bean]. With this as her point of departure, the curator allowed the color blue to guide her in her selection of artworks. The collection includes works from the artists Reinier Asmoredjo, Kenneth Flijders, Shaundell Horton, Sri Irodikromo, Miguel Keerveld, Rinaldo Klas, John Lie A Fo, Kurt Nahar, Sunil Puljhun, Dhiradj Ramsamoedj, Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi, Roddney Tjon Poen Gie, Wilgo Vijfhoven and Hanka Wolterstorff, as well as works from the private collection of Hilde Neus, by among others, José Kamps and Purcy Tjin. Collectively they form a dynamic and powerful combination with women front and center, a perfect fit with the person Caatje van Heijne.
Caatje van Heijne lived in the 18th century and was an enslaved woman, who was later manumitted by her owner Johan Frederik Heijne. Together they had three children and when he passed away, Caatje and the children inherited the Dwingelo coffee plantation. This inheritance, combined with Caatje’s business acumen, brought her and her descendants prosperity and wealth. On Saturday February 17, 2024, Hilde Neus will give a presentation in Readytex Art Gallery about the life of this remarkable woman.

Gedurende de maand februari is in Readytex Art Gallery (RAG), Paramaribo, Suriname, de bijzondere expositie In de Blaauwe Boon te zien, samengesteld door historisch letterkundige Hilde Neus, die vooral vrouwengeschiedenissen beschrijft. Deze expositie is geïnspireerd door haar onderzoek naar de gemanumitteerde Caatje van Heijne, die twee huizen bezat in de Maagdenstraat en Jodenbreestraat, dichtbij waar nu Readytex Art Gallery staat.
Caatje van Heijne was ook eigenaresse van de koffieplantage Dwingelo. De koffie die er werd verbouwd, noemde men in Suriname blauwe bonen, omdat deze door het wassen een blauwe tint kregen. De naam van de expositie is dan ook heel toepasselijk In de Blaauwe Boon. In lijn hiervan heeft de curator zich bij de selectie van werken laten leiden door de kleur blauw. De collectie bestaat uit werken van de kunstenaars Reinier Asmoredjo, Kenneth Flijders, Shaundell Horton, Sri Irodikromo, Miguel Keerveld, Rinaldo Klas, John Lie A Fo, Kurt Nahar, Sunil Puljhun, Dhiradj Ramsamoedj, Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi, Roddney Tjon Poen Gie, Wilgo Vijfhoven en Hanka Wolterstorff, en werken uit de privécollectie van Hilde Neus, onder andere van José Kamps en Purcy Tjin. Het geheel is een dynamische en krachtige combinatie waarin de vrouw centraal staat, wat heel goed aansluit bij de persoon van Caatje van Heijne.
Caatje van Heijne leefde in de 18e eeuw en was een slavin, die later werd gemanumitteerd door haar eigenaar Johan Frederik Heijne. Zij hadden samen drie kinderen en na zijn overlijden erfden Caatje en de kinderen de koffieplantage Dwingelo. Deze erfenis en Caatjes goed gevoel voor zakendoen brachten haar en de nakomelingen voorspoed en rijkdom. Op zaterdag 17 februari 2024 zal Hilde Neus een presentatie geven in de galerie over het leven van deze bijzondere vrouw.
