Opening at Readytex Art Gallery (RAG) on March 7, 2024, is the special solo-exhibition of Reinier Asmoredjo, titled Mi Gudu; 40 jaar beeldend kunstenaar [My Treasure; 40 years visual artist]. With this exhibition, the artist celebrates his active and multi-faceted art career of already four decades, together with the public.
As an artist who is highly productive, Reinier has once again created an impressive collection of works, ranging from paintings in various sizes on canvas, paper and foam board, to painted vases and plates. In order to make a suitable selection for his exhibition, Reinier asked his colleagues Rinaldo Klas and Sri Irodikromo to take on the role of curator. The title Mi Gudu (sometimes also meaning ‘my love’) could easily refer to the female beauties that grace almost every work from the hand of this artist. For him however, the title has a deeper meaning. In his versatile career as a visual artist, teacher, cartoonist and illustrator, Reinier has built an impressive oeuvre that consists of much more than paintings and painted objects. He also drew countless detailed and carefully documented studies, and has also produced well over 5000 socially critical cartoons for Dagblad Suriname. “That is my treasure, or rather: mi gudu,” says Reinier rightly and proudly about all that he has created in over 40 years.
In Mi Gudu; 40 jaar beeldend kunstenaar, Reinier presents a striking collection of artworks bursting with color and zest for life, characterized by a visual imagery rich in symbolism that consistently radiates positivity, fertility, beauty and the infinite cycle of life. In his compositions he continuously searches for a perfect synthesis between abstraction and realism, and lines and circles always play an important role.
In addition to his paintings, the exhibition gives visitors the unique opportunity to enjoy a selection of the many studies that he has so far produced and kept in by now 13 sketch books. Also on display, by way of a digital slideshow, are several of his ‘Fawaka’ cartoons. Another remarkable development that we are happy to share with you also, is that the Nationaal Archief Suriname [National Archive Suriname] has agreed to permanently add the art studies and cartoons by Reinier Asmoredjo to their archives. Yet another milestone worth celebrating!

Op 7 maart 2024 opende de bijzondere solo-expositie van kunstenaar Reinier Asmoredjo, getiteld Mi Gudu; 40 jaar beeldend kunstenaar, bij Readytex Art Gallery (RAG). Met deze expositie viert Reinier samen met het publiek het feit dat hij al vier decennia lang op verschillende manieren actief is in de kunstwereld.
Als kunstenaar die door de jaren heen altijd zeer productief geweest is, creëerde Reinier ook voor deze expositie een indrukwekkende collectie kunstwerken, variërend van schilderijen in diverse afmetingen op canvas, papier en foamboard, tot beschilderde vazen en borden. Om voor zijn tentoonstelling een passende selectie te maken, vroeg Reinier zijn collega’s Rinaldo Klas en Sri Irodikromo om de rol van curator te vervullen. De titel Mi Gudu zou makkelijk kunnen verwijzen naar het vrouwelijk schoon dat pronkt in haast elk werk van de hand van Reinier. De titel heeft voor de kunstenaar echter een diepere betekenis. In zijn veelzijdige carrière als beeldend kunstenaar, docent, cartoonist en illustrator heeft Reinier namelijk een indrukwekkend oeuvre opgebouwd dat uit veel meer bestaat dan schilderijen en beschilderde objecten. Hij maakte ook talloze gedetailleerde en zorgvuldig gedocumenteerde studies en produceerde inmiddels al meer dan 5000 maatschappijkritische cartoons voor Dagblad Suriname. “Dat is mijn rijkdom, oftewel mi gudu,” zegt Reinier terecht en met trots over al het werk dat hij in meer dan 40 jaren gecreëerd heeft.
In Mi Gudu; 40 jaar beeldend kunstenaar, presenteert Reinier Asmoredjo een schitterende collectie kunstwerken die zoals altijd barsten van kleur en levenslust, met een kenmerkende beeldtaal rijk in symboliek die consequent positiviteit, vruchtbaarheid, schoonheid en de oneindige cyclus van het leven uitstraalt. In zijn composities is hij voortdurend op zoek naar een perfecte synthese tussen abstractie en realisme, en lijnen en cirkels spelen altijd een belangrijke rol. Naast zijn schilderijen krijgt u in de tentoonstelling de unieke gelegenheid om te genieten van een greep uit de talloze studies die hij in ruim 13 tekenschriften vastgelegd heeft en krijgt u middels een digitale slide-show ook een selectie uit zijn ‘Fawaka’ cartoons te zien. Een zeer bijzondere ontwikkeling die we ook graag met u delen, is dat met het Nationaal Archief Suriname (NAS) overeengekomen is dat de kunststudies en cartoons van Reinier Asmoredjo in hun bestand opgenomen zullen worden. Nog een mijlpaal die het vieren waard is!
